Print one A4 sheet, landscape, double-sided (flip on the short edge), with standard or minimum margins, then fold down the dashed line into an A5 booklet. If the inner pages come out upside down, switch to long-edge flip.

Printing this booklet, double-sided

  1. 41

Print side one. One A4 sheet, landscape. This side holds pages 4 and 1.

  2. ⟲

Put it back in. Flip the sheet on the short (left / right) edge, keeping the top edge at the top. Feed it back into the tray.

  3. 23

Print side two, then fold. This side prints pages 2 and 3. Fold down the dashed centre line: it reads 1, 2, 3, 4.

If the inside pages come out upside down, your printer flips on the long edge, switch that setting to short edge (or vice versa) and print again.

At an information evening, or with your midwife

The bigger picture. It comes up at a tour or an information evening (Infoabend), and your own midwife can talk it through too.

  • Can I move around freely and find my own positions in labour?
  • Can I eat and drink while I labour?
  • What is in the room: a bath or birth pool, a bed, space to stay upright?
  • Can we keep the room calm, and can I bring my own things (music, a pillow)?Können wir den Raum ruhig halten, und darf ich eigene Dinge mitbringen (Musik, ein Kissen)?
  • What can help with the pain, from warm water and movement to an epidural (PDA)?Was kann bei den Schmerzen helfen, von warmem Wasser und Bewegung bis zur PDA?
  • How is the baby monitored: now and then, or continuously (CTG)?Wie wird das Baby überwacht: ab und zu, oder durchgehend (CTG)?
  • If my baby needs extra care after birth, what happens, and can we stay together?
  • If a caesarean becomes the safest way, can it still be gentle: my partner beside me, my baby on my chest?
  • Right after birth, is there unhurried time together, skin to skin?
  • Can the cord finish pulsing before it is clamped?Kann die Nabelschnur auspulsieren, bevor abgenabelt wird?
  • Is skin-to-skin and the first feed supported straight away?
  • Can I take photos, and who may be in the room?

There are no wrong questions here, so choose the few that matter to you. And trust your intuition: when you are choosing, how a place feels often tells you as much as what is said.

What to expect in pregnancy

Booklet 1 of 3. How antenatal care works in Germany, and how to choose where to give birth. Keep it in your Mutterpass.

Your care

  • Care is shared between a midwife (Hebamme) and a gynaecologist (Frauenarzt / Frauenärztin). A midwife can do almost every check-up; the practice does the scans. Who leads is your choice.
  • Around ten check-ups and three scans map the months. Carry your Mutterpass everywhere; it travels with you.
  • Your due date (errechneter Termin, ET) is a guide, not a deadline. Most babies come in the weeks around it.

Choosing where to give birth

  • Hospital (Klinik), birth house (Geburtshaus), or home (Hausgeburt). You can tour and register at more than one, and change your mind.
  • If the same midwife throughout matters to you, ask about a Beleghebamme or a birth house, where continuity is more likely.

Good to arrange early

  • A birth preparation course (Geburtsvorbereitungskurs), often covered by insurance.
  • A postpartum midwife (Nachsorge) for home visits after the birth. Good ones book up.
  • Who will be with you: a partner, a trusted friend, or a doula.
